Poetry Translation Competition: Enter By Jan. 1 (and Win)
Clearly, MPT (Modern Poetry in Translation) magazine had Arabic-English translators in mind when they launched their first-ever competition:
Translate any poem on the subject of FREEDOM into English verse. The poem may be in any language, from any age, and in translation should not exceed twenty lines. The original text should be submitted with your translation.
First prize is £200, second is £75, and three runners up will receive subscriptions to MPT and have their work published in the magazine.
The entry will cost you—£4 per poem / £3 for subscribers—so work hard on one poem and give it a spin. No longer than 20 lines, and the translation can’t have been previously published (in any form).

Yes, I am still out of town. The International Prize for Arabic Fiction longlist will be revealed tomorrow, and I will miss it! But insha’allah @zuberino will be able to get in and update ArabLit tomorrow with the list.

Interesting. I shall check this out. It’s a long time since I did any serious translating. I had just started to collaborate with the late Vera Rich – proofing one or two of her more recent translations – when she was taken from us. It was through her inspiration that I started translating on my own, in my case from French.
