Shortlist Announced for 2013 MEMO Palestine Book Awards

The Middle East Monitor has announced the shortlist for the organization’s 2013 MEMO Palestine Book Awards, which seeks to honour and promote the best books written in English on the subject of Palestine:

The Rise and Fall of Human Rights – Lori Allen (Stanford University Press)

The Gaza Cookbook – Laila el Haddad and Maggie Schmitt (Just World Books)

Seeking Palestine – edited by Penny Johnson and Raja Shehadeh (Olive Branch Press/Interlink Publishing Group USA; Originally published by Women Unlimited, India)

Brokers of Deceit – Rashid Khalidi (Beacon Press)

Meet me in Gaza – Louisa Waugh (Saqi Books)

According to MEMO:

In November 2013 we will be hosting a book awards evening which will serve as an award ceremony in which a monetary award will be gifted to the person judged to have written the “Best Book on Palestine 2012/2013”. Two runners up will also be awarded.

Previous shortlistees have included I was born there, I was born here, by Mourid Barghouti; last year’s overall winners were Jen Marlowe and Sami Al-Jundi for their book The Hour of Sunlight.
