‘Queens of Syria,’ a Play About Civil War, Touring Eight Cities in England and Scotland

Next month, the UK-based Developing Artists and Refuge Productions will work together an eight-city tour of “Queens of Syria,” a theatrical work about Syria’s civil war based on Euripedes’ anti-war “Trojan Women”:

Productions begin in London on July 5 and close on July 24, also in the capital.

The play was first performed in Amman, Jordan, in 2013, born out of workshops led by the Syrian director Omar Abusaada. This production will feature fifteen women, none of whom had acted before their involvement with this show.

According to organizers:

In film and on stage, the women courageously explore parallels between the ancient Greek tragedy and the catastrophe of today’s civil war. Their first-hand experience of a country in turmoil mirrors the Trojan women they portray, displaced and enslaved by war.

Set against the backdrop of Yasmin Fedda’s award-winning documentary, this moving production plays for the first time at the Young Vic before a UK tour.

Organizers are still fundraising to enable payments to the refugees as artists, to “fund drama workshops & a children’s creche in Jordan, & help cover the visa & travel costs to the UK.”
