Sunday Submissions: The $2M ‘Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation’

This is a prize that hands out a ridiculous amount of cash:

The Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding (SHATIU) is accepting nominations for the year 2017, and this goes for translations from and into English, French, Chinese, Japanese, Malay, Farsi, and Urdu, as long as the partner-language on the other side is Arabic.

As for European languages, there are only two in contention, but they are set to gain the biggest prizes:

Translation from Arabic into English (200,000 USD)

Translation from English into Arabic (200,000 USD)

Translation from Arabic into French (200,000 USD)

Translation from French into Arabic (200,000 USD)

Achievement Award (200,000 USD)

There are more prizes for translations into and out of Asian languages, although with a smaller (yet still hefty) purse:

The deadline for submissions is August 31, 2017, and the nomination form can be found online. Last year’s winners include Michael Cooperson, Salvador Peña Martín, and Banipal.
