Sunday Submissions: ALTA Travel Fellowships

The time is here, the time is now, to apply for a travel fellowship to attend the 2019 American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) Conference:

This year’s conference is set to be held in Rochester, NY from a chilly November 7 – 10, although of course activities will be indoors.

Each year, between “four and six” $1000 travel fellowships are awarded to emerging translators. One of these is a Peter K. Jansen Memorial Fellowship for “a translator of color and/or one who is translating from an underrepresented diaspora or stateless language.”

As Susan Bernofsky writes over at Translationista, “Attending the ALTA Conference is a fantastic way for an emerging translator to jumpstart their translation career by meeting others in the field, getting acquainted with colleagues’ work, hearing and participating in discussions of craft, and learning what topics are currently most being talked about in the translation world. The fellows also present their work at a special reading each year that is always well-attended.”

The deadline for travel-fellowship applications is April 15, and applications must include:

  • A cover letter explaining your interest in attending the conference
  • Current CV / resumé
  • Up to 10 pages of translated work (poetry or prose, double-spaced)
  • The corresponding original language text

You can find out more about how to apply and previous years’ fellows at the ALTA website.
