Leading Syrian author Samar Yazbek joins the Edinburgh International Book Festival live from France to discuss the vital role of the imagination in the struggle for survival.
The book is scheduled for English publication in Fall 2021.
Author Samar Yazbek and translator Leri Price have been longlisted for the 2021 National Book Award in the “Translated Literature” category.
Yazbek’s La Marcheuse follows Rima, a girl from Damascus who cannot stop walking.
“We had no experience of dealing with something like this. The smell from the hospital was like the stench of rotten eggs. We gave people the standard facemasks but it did no good.”
The 2021 ArabLit Story Prize will open to submissions on April 1, 2021.
The six recipients were selected from among nearly 100 applications that came from across the region. Decisions were made with the assistance of a jury that included authors Ahmed Naje, Hussam Hilali, and Samar Yazbek, and playwright and researcher Meriam Bousselmi.
Fourteen of the translations coming from Arabic to English in the fall of 2021.
They will support 15 titles from 14 countries in 12 languages, including two titles translated from Arabic.
