Reem Bassiouney

reemReem Bassiouney is an award-winning Egyptian author and sociolinguistics professor who has written several novels and a number of short stories. She won the 2009 Sawiris Foundation Literary Prize for Young Writers for her novel Dr. Hanaa.

Her novel The Pistachio Seller, trans. Osman Nusairi, was published by Syracuse University Press in October 2009 and Dr. Hanaa was released as Professor Hanaa by Garnet, translated by Laila Helmi.

Her academic books include Functions of Code-switching in Egypt (2006), Arabic sociolinguistics (2008), and Arabic and the media (2010). She has published numerous articles on Arabic lingusitics topics including code-switching, language and gender, levelling, register, Arabic and advertisements, linguistics and literature and language policies in the Arab world.
