‘Cliff Becker Book Prize in Translation,’ AmazonCrossing’s $10M Investment, and Other Open Calls

Earlier this month, Amazon announced that its AmazonCrossing imprint would receive $10 million over the next five years to fund the translation of books into English:

There has been much debate over what AmazonCrossing — now America’s “biggest publisher of translated literature” — might mean for translators and translations. For the most part, they seem to be publishing genre work in translation, which many other translation-oriented publishers don’t. In any case, they still haven’t published any translations from the Arabic.

Also, White Pine Press and the Cliff Becker Endowment for the Literary Arts have announced the fourth annual Cliff Becker Book Prize in Translation. The prize selects and produces one volume of poetry annually in a bilingual edition.

Submissions must contain 80 – 140 pages of bilingual manuscripts in the original as well as English translations of poetry. More about the requirements at https://literarytranslators.wordpress.com.

It’s also time to apply for a 2016 PEN/Heim translation grant. There were few submissions from the Arabic last year; the deadline’s November 16, 2015.

Also, for those who translate into Turkish (from any language, including Arabic), a new Talât Sait Halman Translation Award has been launched.
