Watch Two New One-woman Plays from Egypt in Boston or Online

Unfortunately, these two plays — “They Say Dancing is a Sin” and “The Mirror” are happening on the same day as the global readings for Ashraf Fayadh: 

However, if it doesn’t conflict with your reading time, Boston’s Huntington Theatre Company will be presenting “The Mirror,” by Yasmeen Emam, in which “a teenage girl is paralyzed by the question of whether to wear a revealing or conservative dress to the wedding of a man she dreamed of marrying” and “They Say Dancing is a Sin,” by Hany Abdel Nasser and Mohamed Abdel Mu’iz, in which “an independently-minded belly dancer derides the duplicity and greed of her well-to-do patrons.”

Access to the workshop performance and conversation will be free for those in Boston. The plays are also set to livestream on the commons-based HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv at 7:30pm EST.

Both plays were co-translated and directed by Rebekah Maggor, who previously directed “Report on Revolutionary Circumstances and Other Plays from Egypt” at Rowan University outside Philadelphia.

“They Say Dancing is a Sin” and “The Mirror” will both be published by Seagull Books in the forthcoming anthology Tahrir Tales: Plays from the Egyptian Revolution.
