No Arabic books made the longlists for the 2018 National Translation Awards (NTA) in Poetry and Prose, organized by the American Literary Translators Association. However, Lebanese novelist Charif Majdalani’s gorgeous Moving the Palace, beautifully translated by Edward Gauvin, did make the prose longlist, alongside books by László Krasznahorkai, Stendhal, Mathias Énard, and other luminaries:
The NTA prize makes its mark by being “the only national award for translated fiction, poetry, and literary nonfiction that includes a rigorous examination of both the source text and its relation to the finished English work.”
The 2018 longlists feature writing in 13 different languages, and are being judged by Kareem James Abu-Zeid, Jennifer Feeley, and Sawako Nakayasu (for poetry) and Esther Allen, Tess Lewis, and Jeremy Tiang (for prose).
The five-book shortlists will be announced in September with the winner being announced at the end of October. Winning translators will receive a $2,500 cash prize each.
