What We Published in 2025
~January 2025~
In January, we gathered a listicle of Arabic works forthcoming in English translation this year. In prize news, the International Prize for Arabic Fiction announced its judges and its 16-book longlist for 2025, AlMultaqa Prize for the Arabic Short Story announced their shortlisted short-story collections, and Banipal announced that Katharine Halls had won its 2024 award for her translation of Ahmed Naji’s Rotten Evidence. For our January newsletter for publishing professionals, we looked at the 2025 IPAF: What Hit & What Missed; we also published some extraordinary writing from Gaza, including Doha Kahlout’s “Goodbye, War” Yousef el-Qedra’s “Writing in Gaza: An Act of Existence in the Shadows of War,” Husam Maarouf’s “What Do Gazans Read During War,” and Shaimaa Abulebda’s, “The Tent is Closing in on Us.” Iraqi novelist Mahmoud Saeed died on January 27.

International Prize for Arabic Fiction Announces 2025’s 16-Book Longlist

~February 2025~
In February, we had fiction, poetry, and literary nonfiction from writers from Oman, Bahrain, Palestine, Sudan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and beyond. In prize news, we announced the new Azhar Prize was open for submissions, the winners of the second annual Bait AlGhasham DarArab Prize were made public, Ibtisam Azem’s Book of Disappearance made the International Booker longlist, and so was the shortlist of the 2025 International Prize for Arabic Fiction. Our February publishers’ newsletter featured the work of Gaza-based Palestinian author Yousri Alghoul and looked back at the 2025 Cairo International Book Fair. A new episode of the BULAQ podcast featured Alia Malek, talking about the new collection of Syrian literature she edited, Aftershocks. Translator Pierre Joris died on February 27.

In March, we launched our bilingual short-story anthology Slender Thorns: Award-winning Flash Fiction in Arabic and English, which was accompanied by audio versions of the stories read by professional voice actors. We also launched a new series, “Between Two Arabic Translators,” hosted by Yasmeen Hanoosh. In prize news, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award announced their literary shortlists and the Bait Alghasham DarArab Prize opened, with a new category. On the BULAQ podcast, we spoke to Egyptian author Omar El-Akkad about his new nonfiction work, One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This, and our March publishers’ newsletter focused on books that center on “food, glorious food.”

Publication Day for ‘Slender Thorns’

In April, we launched the GRIEF issue of ArabLit Quarterly, which extends to a special section of “grief in letters” that’s available at arablit.org/grief. Several awards were announced this month: the Sheikh Zayed Book Award went to Hoda Barakat’s Hind, or the Most Beautiful Woman in the World, the International Prize for Arabic Fiction to Mohamed Samir Nada’s The Prayer of Anxiety, three Arabic titles made the ‘PEN Presents x International Booker’ shortlist, and our own Batool Abu Akleen was shortlisted for the 2025 London Magazine Poetry Prize. New books out in translation in April include Nasser Rabah’s Gaza: The Poem Said Its Piece, Maria Dadouch’s I Want Golden Eyes, and the short-story anthology Book of Sana’a, ed. Laura Kasinof. New zines include Poppy Seeds: Poetry from Gazan Youth.
Poet and photographer Fatima Hassouna was killed in an Israeli airstrike on April 16, 2025. We grieve and rage and echo this loss.

In May, ArabLit contributor Husam Maarouf launched a new publishing house: Gaza Publications. We talked to him about the publishing house; a short story from the inaugural collection is forthcoming in June in Alaa Alqaisi’s translation.
