For May 15, 2025

 

I’ll make a deal with a dream,

with an angel passing by my bedside,

so I can be there, with you.

 

Have you seen what parties are like in heaven?

Should I bring a gift?

Anyhow: Happy birthday, Essa.

 

I won’t remind you that it’s the Nakba’s 77th anniversary.

Or maybe I will, and we’ll share a biting laugh.

What does life look like in heaven, on the cusp of forty?

 

I’m not sure what kind of wishes

I’ll ask God to grant,

but I want a chocolate cake.

 

We both love hot Nabulsi knafeh, fresh from the oven.

Or maybe I’ll order what we were planning for our last meet-up,

the one that never came:

 

Rice with lamb. Or else

we’ll settle for grilled chicken, as usual.

Do you still like shrimp bowls with lots of tomatoes?

 

We’ll sing together, and maybe we won’t let Ouda sing along,

on the joking pretext that we shouldn’t disturb the others.

Although I long to hear his ruckus.

 

We’ll ask to see the Gaza Sea,

I know you miss it, too—

you miss sitting and laughing.

 

We’ll ask God to smite hunger in Gaza with his hands,

then smite the genocide.

We’ll chant “Free Palestine”: a shout for everyone.

 

I’ll introduce you to my nephew Mohaymen.

And, by the way, it’s his birthday, too.

He would have turned nine today.

 

عيد ميلاد سعيد

أعقد صفقة مع الحلم،

مع ملاكا مارا بجانب نومي

أن أكون هناك معكم

ترى كيف تبدو الاحتفالات في الجنة؟

هل علي إحضار هدية؟

بالمناسبة، عيد ميلاد سعيد، عيسى

لن أذكرك انه ذكرى النكبة السابعة والسبعين

أو ربما أفعل ونضحك ساخرين سويا

كيف تبدو الحياة على مشارف الأربعين في الجنة؟

لست متاكدا من شكل الأماني

الذي سأطلبها من الله

لكني أريد كعكة بالشيكولاتة

كلانا يحب الكنافة النابلسية الساخنة

أو ربما اطلب ما كنا نخطط له لتجمعنا الأخير

الذي لم يأتي

أرز بالضأن ثم نكتفي بالدجاج المشوي كالعادة

هل لازلت تحب زبدية الجمبري بالكثير من الطماطم؟

سنغني معا،

أو ربما نستثني عودة من الغناء،

بدعوى ساخرة لعدم الإزعاج

رغم اشتياقي لصخبه

سنطلب رؤية بحر غزة،

أعرف انكم تشتاقونه أيضا

تشتاقون الجلوس والضحكات

سنطلب أن يقتل الله الجوع في غزة بيده،

يقتل الإبادة

سنهتف “فلسطين حرة”

كامنية جماعية للجميع هناك

سأعرفك على مهيمن

ابن اختي هناك

بالمناسبة، عيد ميلاده اليوم أيضا

كان سيبلغ التاسعة من عمره
