ALITFEST 2021: A Tale of African Novels and Their Publishers

October 2, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

This panel with Sawad Husain and Nana Awere Damoah, moderated by S. Su’eddie Vershima Agema is part of the Abuja Literary and Arts Festival 2021. It seeks to explore the complexities that exist in the African Novel publishing industry.
As we know, the dream of every African writer is to be published by an international publisher because that’s where you get the big dollars, the big book deals, multiple deals, and funds for marketing and promotions. What this also means is that a lot of African Novels have their rights with international publishers.
The question now is:
– Who owns a lot of our big African novels?
– And what does this mean long term?
We also hope to explore some broader thematic issues of the imbalance of power between the West, the Global North, the Global South, and Africa.
