Mansoura Ez Eldin (Egypt) – Beyond Paradise
Muhammad Al Mansi Qindeel (Egypt) – A Cloudy Day on the West Side
Rabee Jabir (Lebanon) – America
Abdo Khal (Saudi Arabia) – She Throws Sparks
Raba’l Madhoun (Palestine) – The Lady From Tel Aviv
Jamal Naji (Jordan) – When The Wolves Grow Old
I don’t know about Beyond Paradise, but Mansoura Ez Eldin’s first novel, Maryam’s Maze, was both technically and psychologically interesting. But, perhaps it wouldn’t be politic for the award to go to three Egyptians in a row (Bahaa Taher, Youssef Ziedan, and … ?)
The winner is set to be announced at an awards ceremony in Abu Dhabi on March 2 of next year, the first day of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.
Descriptions of each “shortlistee” are here.
In other lit-prize news this month, the AUC’s Naguib Mahfouz Award went to Syrian writer Khalil Sweileh.
