Independent Foreign Fiction Prize Shortlists /Dark Side of Love/, not /Yalo/
I can’t comment on the whole list, as I was only really familiar with the Arab lit on the longlist (Madman of Freedom Square (Hassan Blasim), Sunset Oasis (Bahaa Taher), Yalo (Elias Khoury), and—written in German by a Syrian author—The Dark Side of Love).
Of those four, one has reached the shortlist: The Dark Side of Love. You can read my review of it here.
Yalo—shortlisted for the “best translated book award” in 2009—was the greater artistic accomplishment.
On the plus side, Anthea Bell—who does magic translations from German—gets shortlisted twice. Cheers, Anthea.
