‘1,000-Book Campaign’ Aims to Re-establish Cultural Ties Between Egypt and Algeria

Finally, someone is seeking to restore sanity to Egypt-Algeria cultural relations.

After a vicious World Cup battle last November, the two countries brought their football feud to bear on this year’s book fairs, with bannings, threats, and dis-invitations.

Now, a group of Egyptian writers have launched a campaign to collect 1,000 books and send them to Algeria. A Facebook-issued statement said the initiative hopes to “enforce cultural ties with Algeria.” The Egyptian group urges Algerians to do something similar, perhaps sending 1,000 Algerian books to the Alexandria Library.
