I found a number of these videos, posted to YouTube a few weeks back by “Big Think,” which address al-Aswany’s creative process (he writes in the morning) his favorite writers (Dostoevsky, Marquez), his feelings on translation (apparently the Italian one wasn’t so good), and more.
But the one that caught my attention as interesting was the one where he talks about writing about sex. Or he doesn’t like the word sex in English, but there you go.
There are a number of quickie author interviews on this website Big Think, although at a glance the only Arab authors I found profiled were al-Aswany and Arab-American playwright Najla Said.
