Translation (Prize) Deadlines Approaching
Several deadlines are approaching, more or less quickly; anyhow, no points taken off for submitting early.
FEB 1: The deadlines for the $3,000 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, the $3,000 PEN Translation Prize, and for PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grants are all Feb 1, 2013.
FEB 15: The British Comparative Literature Association and The British Centre for Literary Translation (University of East Anglia) sponsor annual prizes for the best unpublished literary translations from any language into English. Also: If you join the BCLA between July 1, 2012, and January 31, 2013, you may submit one entry free of charge. Submission details here.
MARCH 30: Publishers, please submit your novels from the previous year for the Banipal prize, this year won by Roger Allen’s translation of A Muslim Suicide (Bensalem Himmich). Submission details online.
APRIL 1: “The Syracuse University Press and University of Arkansas, King Fahd Center for Middle East Studies Translation of Arabic Literature Award 2013.” Seriously, I think that’s the name for it. For an unpublished manuscript (you need to have the rights free and clear), winner to be published by SUP. Previous winners include Samah Selim’s translation of Tree of Pearls (Jurji Zaidan), Yasmeen Hanoosh’s translation of Scattered Crumbs (Muhsin al-Ramli), and Issa Boullata’s translation of The Square Moon (Ghada Samman).
