The Department of English Language and Literature, Cairo University, and the Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies, University of Manchester, will collaborate on establishing a new, research-oriented MA programme in Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University. Drawing on existing expertise of faculty in both institutions, the project will focus on designing and delivering a research-driven curriculum that foregrounds the political impact of translation and the ethical responsibility of translators in an increasingly conflictual global and domestic context. The MA will be designed to train a new, critical generation of scholars who can make an informed contribution to the study of translation, at doctoral level and beyond, in the context of existing international power struggles over discourses and the production of knowledge. The project will further support the development of a doctoral programme and provide a platform for continued collaboration between Manchester and Cairo University, including collaboration on MA and PhD co-supervision. The initiative is supported by a grant from the British Academy.
