Friday Finds: Mohammad Rabie and the Horrors of ‘Otared’

Mohammad Rabie’s Otared was shortlisted for the 2016 International Prize for Arabic Fiction, and appeared in Robin Moger’s translation that same year:

In this video interview, Rabie talks about his writing and editing process, the question he gets asked most often about the novel (“Is there any hope in Otared?”), and the novel’s core theme.

Also: Read an extract from the novel.

  1. Thank you for curating these gems. In one of my courses, our next assignment is to explore forms of creative expression originating in the Arab world. I will play this in class to help inspire ideas. Perhaps a student will select Otared for further study. Your entire site is on my course resource list.
