Roger Allen to Translate Collection of ‘Lost’ Mahfouz Stories

Saqi Books announced today that they will publish the as-yet-untitled collection, in Roger Allen’s translation, in autumn 2019.

The collection of lost Mahfouz stories — being published next month in Arabic as همس النجوم (The Whisper of Stars) will be a major event at the 2018 Beirut Arab Book Fair.

Saqi Books has now announced that Roger Allen has been signed on to translate the 18-story collection.

Allen has previously translated five other books by Mahfouz:

Mirrors (1999, American University in Cairo Press)

Autumn Quail (1986, American University in Cairo Press)

Karnak Café (2008 Anchor/Penguin)

Khan al-Khalili (2009, American University in Cairo Press)

The Final Hour (2010, American University in Cairo Press)

Allen retired in 2011 from his position as the Sascha Jane Patterson Harvie Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where he served for forty-three years as Professor of Arabic and Comparative Literature.
