‘Made by Many’ Crowdfunding, ‘Arabian Stories’ Contest, Other Calls for Submissions
Have a fresh translation, an Arabic short-short story, or a literary project? New calls and contests:
Zoomaal’s “Made by Many”
The crowdfunding site Zoomaal, in partnership with Hivos and British Council, recently launched
what they’re calling a “Made-by-Many” Challenge in order “to support creative and cultural events and festivals that have a social or economic impact with an innovative twist.”
Events and festivals from Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Yemen now have the chance to receive part of a $60,000 match-fund, presented by our partners, to encourage collaboration between various stakeholders in the creative, cultural, and innovation sectors, in addition to cross-sectoral and cross-regional collaborations.
This challenge is targeted at initiatives that work on connecting creative and cultural players, with the aim of establishing stronger ties between NGOs, businesses, national and international bodies, artists, and entrepreneurs.
Projects must be coming from and held in: Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, or Yemen, and the event or festival must aim to be held in 2015, and “charity, religious, political, alcohol, adult, and tobacco projects” are not allowed.
The call is open until May 11, and successful projects will have to attend Webinars held by Zoomaal about crowdfunding and how to create a successful campaign. Submit your application here.
“One Thousand Nights and Awakening” Contest
The site “Arabian Stories” has launched a literary contest for Arabic flash fiction, where “winners’ prizes will be based on the number of submitted stories, whose account will be kept beneath, by disclosing the titles of the stories submitted by the time Arabian Stories receives them.”
Stories must be “300 to 500 words, written in Arabic and related to a location in the Arab world.” The deadline is June 30. Submit your story here.
National Translation Award in Prose
The American Literary Translators’ Association (ALTA)-supported National Translation Award in Prose is “awarded annually to a literary translator who has made an outstanding contribution to literature in English by masterfully recreating the artistic force of a book of consummate quality.” Submissions close May 1.
