The Frightened Ones was shortlisted for the 2018 International Prize for Arabic Fiction; its English translation came out in the UK in April and was published in the US last week.
The finalists include two novels translated from Arabic.
“Where else in Lebanon can you find comic books, including feminist comics, books on feminist theories and scholarship, literature, memoirs, and children’s books?”
Also for the first time this year, the majority of winning titles are by women. These include books by Sudanese writer Rania Mamoun and Syrian Dima Wannous.
The book features short excerpts from all six of the novels, with an introduction written by the chair of judges, Ibrahim al-Saafin.
