Amazon.com has awarded the University of Rochester/Three Percent website a $25,000 grant in support of the 2011 Best Translated Book Awards. This grant will support $5,000 cash prizes for both the winning translators and authors.

60,000 Palestinian books were systematically looted by the newly born State of Israel during the 1948 war. The story of the stolen books is not only at the heart of our project but also the launching pad of a much bigger and wider endeavor: We intend on communicating the scope and depth of the Palestinian tragedy through the destruction of Palestinian culture in 1948.

I stumbled across this new site a few days ago (via whom? I can’t remember, but thank you), and was delighted to see its list of suggested books, which includes many excellent texts and authors. (I started to make a sub-list of my favorites, but it was nearly as long as the original.)

It’s no longer Nobel season, but Adonis has a new book coming out in the U.S., so another flutter of press is to be expected. Yesterday’s piece in the NY Times followed the Syrian-French poet on a visit to a class that (his translator) Khaled Mattawa teaches at the University of Michigan.

Richard Jacquemond, who has translated a number of key Egyptian novels (Zaat, Amreekanli) and written about the poetics of translation as well as about the social and literary history of Egypt (Conscience of a Nation), will be speaking at the AUC next month.
